Brian (verified owner) –
I purchased this receiver for three main reasons:
1. Dedicated Airband receiver
2. Portability
3. Ease of use
The AR 109 meets all of these needs – this particular model is the “Moonraker” – it has a nice easy grip matte rubber exterior, light weight, compact size and has the option of using rechargeable batteries (included) or AA alkaline batteries (not included). The radio was easy to listen to right out of the box. The instruction manual is easy to follow for more detailed use of the radio.
The reason for 4 rather than 5 star rating is because the sound quality is only fair, granted the small size necessitates a small speaker but this reduces the readability of transmissions outdoors. The battery compartment is a bit tight when trying to install batteries.
Overall, I am glad I got this radio, as it does pick up a great deal of radio chatter between the airport (11 km away) and aircraft. So easy to carry with me on a walk, hike or relaxing in the park. I also like having the FM band included for broadcast listening to the many FM stations here in the Toronto area. VHF NFM doesn’t offer a whole lot here in this digital age, but I can pick up taxi services, rail and weather broadcasts, as well as local HAMs on the 144 MHz band.
Looking forward to many years of scanning with this little radio and it’s big features.
