Description

The MLA-30+ Shortwave Loop Antenna is an affordable active loop antenna that allows people without the luxury of a large backyard to use an external antenna to boost the performance of the their Shortwave Radio and increase the number of radio stations and broadcasts that can be received. The MLA-30+ Shortwave Loop Antenna can be mounted indoors on any non-conductive rod or tube, such as PVC conduit or fibreglass rod (not metal). The loop element of the MLA-30+ Shortwave Loop Antenna has a diameter of 60cm and is connected to the active amplifier housing by two stainless steel wing nuts.

The MLA-30+ Shortwave Loop Antenna is supplied with a “bias tee” power injector and derives the DC voltage (12v) necessary for operation from any USB power supply or power bank. Despite criticism of the USB components adding RF noise to the system, Tecsun Radios Australia has found during lab tests the power injector is well filtered and there is no discernible difference between using this setup when compared to a 12 volt linear power supply and separate bias tee.

The MLA-30+ Shortwave Loop Antenna provides good performance between 500kHz and 30MHz, and can be rotated to optimise reception and null out interfering signals. This is particularly useful on the MW/AM broadcast band where adjacent stations can be nulled to improve the listening experience.

The MLA-30+ Shortwave Loop Antenna packs a powerful punch when tuning in to shortwave radio broadcasts achieving best in class status and surpassing the performance of other antennas by as much as four fold.

Uniquely, the Tecsun Radios Australia MLA-30+ Shortwave Loop Antenna is supplied with both an SMA to BNC adaptor and a BNC to 3.5mm adaptor to ensure compatibility with all modern shortwave receivers. The factory version MLA-30+ Loop Antenna doesn’t include these adaptors which limits the radios that can be connected to the antenna or requires listeners to purchase additional adaptors.

MLA-30+ Shortwave Loop Antenna Features:

  • Reception frequency: 500 kHz to 30 MHz (reduced performance to 100kHz)
  • Pre-amplifier included
  • Bias-T power supply via supplied USB cable
  • Power Supply: 5 V USB
  • Current Drain: 750uA
  • Coaxial cable length: 10 meters
  • Antenna connector: SMA male
  • Adaptors Supplied: SMA female to BNC male, SMA female to 3.5mm mono phono

Fantastic antenna! I received this antenna in the mail yesterday (Melbourne) and have already quadrupled the amount of shortwave station I could barely hear on a 20 meter longwire that I have setup! I’m now also able to receive the 20 and 40 meter bands clearly, which I struggled to on my longwire.

Recommended and defiantly worth the price!

I ordered an MLA-30+ at 5:00 pm on Tuesday, and it arrived at 10:30 am on Thursday. As usual, I can’t ask for anything better. I highly recommend Tecsun Radios Australia.

Stephen Hinder (verified owner) – 13/06/2026

I recently made a significant acquisition, purchasing the MLA-30 Antenna a couple of weeks ago, specifically in May 2026. This decision, while carefully considered, did come with a notable financial outlay. The price for the antenna itself was a fair bit higher than I had initially anticipated, particularly when factoring in the postage costs. Indeed, I had scouted several other selling sites and found more budget-friendly options there. However, despite the higher price tag, I was resolute in my choice. My conviction stemmed from a deep-seated desire for authenticity and quality. I knew, with absolute certainty, that by opting for this particular seller, I was acquiring the ridgy-didge product – the genuine, original MLA-30 with its distinctive green power LED. This green indicator light, for those in the know, is a tell-tale sign of an authentic unit, and that assurance was worth the premium in my book.
The anticipation during the shipping period was palpable, and upon its arrival, I wasted no time in getting it set up. After carefully installing the antenna, a process that involved meticulous attention to detail to ensure optimal performance, I proceeded to connect it to my Tecsun S-2200X receiver also purchased from Garry. This particular receiver is a cornerstone of my radio setup, and I had high expectations for how it would perform with the new antenna. What transpired next, however, completely surpassed those expectations. I was, in a word, utterly amazed by the immediate results.
The difference in reception quality, in comparison to my previous longwire antenna, was nothing short of astounding. “WoW” was the spontaneous exclamation that escaped my lips, a genuine expression of disbelief and delight. Prior to this purchase, I must confess, I harbored a considerable degree of skepticism regarding the true capabilities of this MLA-30 antenna. Online reviews and forum discussions painted a promising picture, but as a seasoned enthusiast, I’ve learned to approach such claims with a healthy dose of caution. I questioned whether it could truly deliver on its promises, especially given the various environmental factors that can impede signal reception.
My skepticism, I am now more than happy to admit, was entirely misplaced. The MLA-30 has not only met but profoundly exceeded all my expectations. The clarity, strength, and sheer number of signals it pulls in are truly remarkable. One of the inherent characteristics of the MLA-30 is its directional nature, which, while offering superior signal isolation, also presents a unique challenge for optimal performance across various azimuths. Consequently, I am now in the preliminary stages of rigging up a rotation system. This project is currently in an experimental phase, but the goal is to allow for precise directional adjustments, maximizing the antenna’s potential to capture even the faintest of signals from across the globe. This endeavor speaks to my renewed enthusiasm and the confidence I now have in this antenna’s capabilities.
So, in general, to put it mildly, I am a very happy man. The investment has paid off handsomely, and the hours I now spend exploring the airwaves are filled with a newfound sense of joy and discovery. My sincere thanks go out to Garry and his team for providing such an exceptional product and for their dedicated service. Their contribution has significantly enhanced my amateur radio experience. 73’s, old man.
